Between 0.60 and 1.03 mg/L depending on your suburb, against an Australian Drinking Water Guidelines value of 5 mg/L.

Does more chlorine mean the water is unsafe?
No. The highest reading in our service area was 1.03 mg/L, about a fifth of the guideline. Chlorine is what keeps the water safe on the way to your tap. Filtration here is about taste and odour.
Why does the water taste stronger than it used to?
Because chlorine residuals were raised deliberately. Under South East Water’s chlorination strategy, 97% of samples now carry a residual above 0.2 mg/L, up from 81% when the strategy began in 2020. Taste and odour complaints rose 22% in 2024 to 2025. You are not imagining it.
Do you need a water softener here?
No. Hardness averages 18 mg/L, against the 200 mg/L point where scale becomes an issue. If someone recommends a softener in Berwick or Cranbourne, ask what reading they measured.
