Yes. It is treated, disinfected and safe before it reaches your property. Filtration deals with what comes after that: chlorine, sediment, taste and odour. Here is what is actually in it, with the water authority’s own figures.
What changes when you filter Melbourne tap water?
Melbourne tap water is already safe to drink. A whole home filtration system reduces three things: sediment, chlorine, and the taste and odour that comes with chlorine. It does not change how safe the water is, and it does not soften it, because Melbourne’s water is already very soft.

Does WaterMark certification prove the filter works?
WaterMark appears on almost every filtration system sold in Australia and it sounds like proof of performance. It is not. Know the difference before you compare quotes.

A plumbing standard. It certifies that a product is made from safe materials, will not leach into your water, and is legally permitted to connect to mains supply in Australia. It is a legal requirement for any system a plumber installs on your mains.
Tests the plumbing. Says nothing about filtration.
NSF/ANSI 42 & 53
Performance certification
The American standards that actually test what a filter reduces. Standard 42 covers aesthetic effects: taste, odour and chlorine. Standard 53 covers health-related contaminants. This is the certification to ask about when someone makes a large claim.
Tests the filtration. This is the one to ask for.
A company describing its system as WaterMark certified has told you the product is legal to connect to mains supply. Necessary, and not evidence of filtration performance. It is exactly why we hold our own claims to BWT’s stated scope rather than a longer list.

Search results for whole home water filtration system cost are largely drawn from overseas retail listings and from kits sold to be fitted by the buyer. Those are equipment prices. They do not include a licensed plumber, a bypass, sizing for the property, or a certificate of compliance, and in Victoria they describe work a homeowner is not permitted to carry out.

Is Melbourne’s tap water safe to drink?

Yes. Work on a property’s drinking water supply is licensed plumbing work in Victoria. A certificate of compliance is legally required where the work exceeds $750 including materials, labour and GST, so a $2,999 whole home installation is well above the threshold.
The licensed plumber must give you the signed certificate within five days of completing the work and lodge it with the Building and Plumbing Commission within five days. It cannot be withheld over an unpaid invoice.
Does WaterMark certification prove a water filter works?
No. WaterMark, under AS/NZS 3497, is a plumbing standard. It certifies that a product is made from safe materials and is legally permitted to connect to mains supply in Australia. It does not test filtration performance.
